Melli will be our mascot and guide, for the Native Green Garden Supplies domain, which includes the website: nativegreengardensupplies.com, Soil & Sprout: A Native Green Garden Supplies blog, and the newsletter: Grow and Bloom Gazette.
Melli’s name comes straight from her species. She is a honey bee, scientifically known as “Apis mellifera”. This is Latin for “honey-bearing bee”. That is where the “Melli” comes from. Here is something worth knowing. Not all bees are the same. However, they often get lumped together under one bad reputation. When someone says, “I am allergic to bees,” they usually mean the ones that can sting, like honey bees or wasps. But, there are thousands of bee species, each with its own Latin name and its own personality.
Carpenter bees (genus “Xylocopa”), are sometimes called “wood bees”. They bore small holes into wood to nest, are gentle and rarely sting. The males cannot sting at all, and the females almost never do unless directly handled. Bumble bees (“Bombus”), mason bees (“Osmia”), and leefcutter bees (“Megachile”) are all different too, with different behaviors. Bees have different roles in pollination, and different risk levels to humans.
So, next time you hear, “I don’t like bees”, remember, that is like saying, ” I don’t like dogs”, because one breed but someone once. Melli is proud to represent honey bees, and to remind everyone that the bee world is more diverse than its reputation suggests.
For the Native Green Garden Supplies domain, which includes the website at nativegreengardensupplies.com, the blog, which is Back to the Soil: A Native Green Garden Supplies blog, and the newsletter named, Grow and Bloom Gazette, Melli will be our mascot and guide.
I thank you for visiting. I hope you ALL can find something you like, and participate with our growing community.
